Which Lechuza Substrate Is Right for Your Plant?

If you've already discovered Lechuza planters, you've probably come across the substrate range too. PON is the one most people know about, but Lechuza actually makes several different substrates, each designed for a specific type of plant or growing situation.

Choosing the right one makes a real difference to how well your plants grow. Here's a straightforward guide to the full range and which substrate suits which plant.

First, Why Use a Specialist Substrate at All?

Traditional potting mix works, but it comes with limitations. It compacts over time, can harbour pests and fungus, and makes it difficult to get watering right consistently. Lechuza's substrates are mineral-based, peat-free, and designed to work in harmony with the self-watering reservoir system. They stay structurally stable for years and create the kind of root environment that lets plants genuinely thrive rather than just survive.

For a deeper dive into how PON works and why it outperforms regular soil, take a look at our dedicated guide on Lechuza PON.

Lechuza PON: The All-Rounder

PON is the universal substrate in the range and the one most Lechuza users start with. It works well for the vast majority of common indoor and outdoor plants, including foliage plants, flowering plants, herbs and tropical species.

It's a mineral mix of zeolite, pumice and lava granules that keeps roots well aerated, manages moisture consistently and works seamlessly with the sub-irrigation reservoir. A slow-release fertiliser tablet is mixed in at planting time and topped up as needed.

Best for: most indoor plants, tropical species, foliage plants, flowering plants, and herbs.

Lechuza Terrapon: For Outdoor and Potted Plants

Terrapon is specifically developed for outdoor use and potted plants that spend time outside. It's formulated to handle the tougher conditions that come with outdoor growing, including greater temperature fluctuation, higher UV exposure and more variable watering cycles.

If you're growing plants on a balcony, terrace or in an outdoor garden bed, Terrapon is the substrate to reach for.

Best for: outdoor planters, balcony and terrace plants, potted outdoor shrubs and perennials

Lechuza Veggiepon: For Edibles

Veggiepon is designed for growing vegetables and herbs and is 100% vegan. It's free from animal-derived ingredients, making it a clean choice for anything you plan to eat.

It provides the right structure and nutrient balance for edible plants, which have different growing requirements to ornamental species. If you're growing tomatoes, leafy greens, strawberries or a kitchen herb garden, Veggiepon is worth using.

Best for: vegetables, herbs, fruit plants, edible gardens, and kitchen planters.

Lechuza Orchidpon: For Orchids

Orchids are notoriously fussy about their growing conditions, and standard substrates don't suit them well. Orchidpon is developed specifically for orchid species, providing the air circulation and moisture management that tropical orchids need to thrive.

If you've ever struggled to keep orchids alive, switching to Orchidpon in a Lechuza planter is one of the most effective changes you can make.

Best for: orchids and other tropical species with similar root requirements.

Lechuza Basicpon: For Sensitive Plants and Propagation

Basicpon is a gentler substrate designed for sensitive plants and propagation work. It's free from added fertilisers, which makes it suitable for plants that can't handle high nutrient levels and for seedlings or cuttings that need a clean, controlled start.

Best for: sensitive species, seedlings, cuttings, and plants that prefer low nutrient conditions.

Lechuza Monopon: 100% Pumice

Monopon is a pure pumice substrate with no fertiliser added. It's the most minimal option in the range, offering excellent drainage and aeration without any additional inputs.

This makes it particularly useful for plants that need very free-draining conditions and for growers who want complete control over their own fertilising program.

Best for: cacti, succulents, plants requiring very free-draining conditions, and experienced growers who manage their own nutrients.

Lechuza Citruspon: For Citrus Plants

Citrus trees and plants have specific needs that general substrates don't always meet well. Citruspon is formulated specifically for the citrus family, providing the right pH range, nutrient balance and drainage properties for lemons, limes, oranges and other citrus species.

If you're growing citrus in a planter, using the right substrate makes a noticeable difference to fruiting and overall plant health.

Best for: lemon, lime, orange, mandarin and other citrus plants.

Which One Should You Start With?

If you're new to Lechuza substrates and growing common indoor plants, start with PON. It covers the widest range of species and works straight out of the bag with any Lechuza planter.

If you have a specific plant type in mind, match the substrate to the plant using the guide above. The full range is available at PlanterCraft with fast shipping Australia-wide.
